A Brief History of NBA Finals Champions

A graduate of the Institute for High Education in Accounting and Finance, David Raminfard serves both KasLen Textiles and New Point Fabric as president and chief executive officer. Beyond his success as a leader of various businesses, David Raminfard is an avid fan of National Basketball Association (NBA) basketball, particularly during the NBA Finals.

Occasionally held under different names, the NBA Finals is the season-ending championship series of basketball. The series has almost exclusively been structured as a best-of-seven competition between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions since 1947, with the NBA Finals champions receiving the Larry O’Brien trophy.

Over the course of seven decades, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, formerly the Minneapolis Lakers, have established themselves as the most successful teams in terms of NBA Finals results. With 17 and 16 championships, respectively, the Celtics and Lakers own 33 of 70 league championships. Boston won most recently in 2008, and enjoyed the league’s most dominant stretch ever between 1957 and 1969, emerging victorious in 11 of 12 NBA Finals series played over 13 seasons. The Lakers, meanwhile, claimed five of six NBA Finals played between 1949 and 1954, as well as three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002.

The Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Golden State Warriors franchises also have had considerable success in NBA Finals series. Chicago, led by Michael Jordan, won three consecutive NBA Finals on two separate occasions, from 1991 to 1993 and 1996 to 1998. San Antonio’s success has come with consistency, with a streak of 20 consecutive playoff appearances yielding five championships dating back to 1999. The Warriors, now the Golden State Warriors of Oakland, are the most recent NBA powerhouse, winning two of the franchise’s five championships over the last three seasons.
